Dover, NH- Recent ridership reports of the Cooperative Alliance for Seacoast Transportation (COAST) Trolley show that more and more people use the trolley. June 2004 marked the one-year anniversary of the new trolley route. For the first year, ridership went over seventy-four thousand passengers. This is an increase in ridership of 154% in the last year. Steve Wells, Executive Director of COAST says, "Overall, ridership on the COAST Trolley has grown from the very first day" Wells adds, "through the generous support of the City of Portsmouth and the Pease Development Authority, our partners in this project, COAST has been able to extend the free ride policy until further notice. With gas prices over $2 a gallon, riding the trolley becomes even more attractive." The COAST trolley was formed in 2000 to serve both the Pease Tradeport as well as the City of Portsmouth, and has expanded the routes to include Lafayette Road and other high traffic areas.

They are fun, convenient, and people love to ride them. In fact, people rode the Cooperative Alliance for Seacoast Transportation (COAST) trolleys so much in July that the previous year's record was shattered by a whopping 94%. Steve Wells, Executive Director of COAST, says, "Ridership trends in transit have continued to increase nationally. However, when your passenger counts double, you know the route is well-planned and will be a long term success."

Wells continues, "I believe that this goes to prove what an integral part transit plays in the health of a community, and, given a chance, people will use public transportation if it is available and, more importantly, reliable." He adds, "Through the generous sponsorship of our partners, the City of Portsmouth and the Pease Development Authority, COAST has also been able to extend the free trolley rides through the month of August."
